Aplington-Parkersburg girls track and field earns runner-up trophy (PHOTOS)

DES MOINES – Sophia Jungling enjoyed pushing herself to win two state track titles last weekend.

At the meet's end, standing with her teammates and holding a state runner-up trophy that belonged to her school meant so much more.

Jungling's win in the 400 and 800-meter events, combined with silver-medal performances in the 1,500-meter run and on the anchor leg of the distance medley, helped push Aplington-Parkersburg to the runner-up spot in Class 2A at the state track and field meet in Des Moines.

The Falcons finished a single point ahead of third-place Panorama. Mid-Prairie took home Class 2A's team title.

On Thursday afternoon, Jungling became the A-P girls' first individual champion since Rachel Vanderholt won the 100 hurdles in 2007 with a championship time of 56.96 seconds.

Two days later, she ran 2:16.38 for the 800-meter run title, pulling away from Mid-Prairie's Marie Hostetler in the final 200 meters.

Later that day on Twitter, Jungling wrote: "None of my personal success this weekend trumps being State Runner-Ups as a team."
