Aplington plans "Community of Lights" holiday festivities

APLINGTON - The City of Aplington is encouraging residents to get in the holiday spirit by taking part in the “Community of Lights” festivities in town next month.

The celebration, which is put on by the @ Home Aplington committee, is now in its second year.

“Last year was our first year doing this, and it went over really well,” said Aplington City Clerk Deb Prier. “I think it went better than we expected and was very well attended by the community. Our whole goal is to bring people together and offer some holiday fun for the whole family.”

As part of the festivities, residents are encouraged to decorate their property for the holidays, and set up lights around their house or yard.

Then, every Saturday in the month of December, community members are asked to turn on their lights from 6 to 8 p.m. to light up the town of Aplington, and give people an opportunity to drive around town and see the lights.

In addition, there will be fun, family-friendly events at the park during this time each weekend.

Saturday, Dec. 7 – Candy Cane 5K, registration 7:15 a.m., race at 8 a.m.; tree lighting at 7 p.m., Santa visits after tree lighting until 8 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 14 – Live nativity at Presbyterian Church
