Armistice 100th anniversary observed

The 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I provided historical context for ceremonies observing Veterans Day at Aplington-Parkersburg High School and Middle School on Monday.

The Parkersburg and Aplington ceremonies each featured veteran speakers: Kristopher C. Verrett spoke to students in Parkersburg, while Richard Humphrey spoke to those in attendance in Aplington.

Master Sergeant Verrett has earned several accolades for his service in the military, including a Silver Star for his actions during Operation Iraqi Freedom and a Purple Heart, and is now a senior military instructor for the University of Northern Iowa's Reserve Officers' Training Corps.

He spoke of the values that define military service to him using the LDRSHIP acronym: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage.
