Big inning for AGWSR, defeating A-P softball (PHOTOS)

PARKERSBURG – After a tough start, Aplington-Parkersburg softball looked like it was putting something together against Class 1A's sixth-ranked AGWSR.

The Falcons couldn't get the timely hit they needed to pressure the Cougars, though, and AGWSR's bats came alive at Aplington-Parkersburg High School, exploding for 11 runs in the sixth inning of a 19-0 game.

A-P fell to 2-4 overall prior to Monday's NICL East doubleheader with Union. A-P plays Belmond-Klemme on Thursday, plays two at Dike-New Hartford on Friday and will compete against G-R and GMG on Saturday in Gladbrook.

AGWSR, returning many members of last year's state runner-up team in Class 1A, jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the top of the third.

The Falcons got their first baserunners in the bottom half of that inning, threatening with runners at 2nd and 3rd and two outs, but Cassi Brouwer flied out to right to end the inning.

In the fourth inning, the Falcons held the Cougars scoreless in the top half and then loaded the bases with a chance to cut into the Cougars' lead in the bottom half of the frame, but AGWSR pitcher Rachel Sicard coaxed a comebacker to the circle that Sicard deposited to first for the force out and the end of that Falcon threat.
