D-NH students clean up New Hartford gardens for Earth Day

Not afraid of getting a little dirt under their nails, students at the New Hartford Junior High School spent the Friday before last cleaning, digging, pruning, weeding and mulching in the various gardens around New Hartford.

Each year in honor of Earth Day, teachers at the junior high school take students out to different spots around town for a cleanup day, and this year, the gardens around town got some extra attention.

Sandy Becker, an interventionist at the junior high school, says this year the school had 194 students in 6th through 8th grade take part in the cleanup day.

“We’ve done this [cleanup day] for several years,” Becker said. “We try to get kids out and about town to appreciate the things that are done in the community and instill a little community pride in them.”
