Falcon boys hammer D-NH for district title

DENVER – If it were up to Aplington-Parkersburg head boys basketball coach Aaron Thomas, two quality teams like A-P and Dike-New Hartford wouldn't have to face off for district supremacy season after season.

But it came down to the Falcons and Wolverines once again, and A-P put together the right game plan for a big victory, 78-46, at the Cyclone Center in Denver on Wednesday night.

The Falcons (22-1) will play Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in a substate final in Charles City at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Carter Cuvelier scored a Falcon-high 22 points and Alec Oberhauser added 17 points, seven assists and four steals. Senior Coby Hoff led A-P's rebounding efforts with 10 boards.

Beating a team with as much raw talent as the Wolverines three times in a season is no small feat, and it was a challenge for the Falcons to even get on the scoreboard until an Oberhauser three-pointer with 3:58 left in the first quarter.

The teams were tied at 9-all late in the first quarter before a 22-0 run from the Falcons blew the doors off, allowing A-P to storm out to a 36-17 halftime lead.

"It's tough to beat a team three times," Thomas said. "We started a little slow but once we got going, we played very well and got some pressure on them."

   ...

"(G-H-V) is extremely athletic and physical and we have to be ready to play," Thomas said. "They're a good team and that's good, you should have to beat someone good to get to state. We'll watch some film and try to get prepared."

The Wolverines (15-8) have no seniors on their roster and will be able to return next winter with another year of experience up and down the lineup. Moore said D-NH has to be ready to take on that challenge.

"Everybody has to get better," Moore said. "Don't be satisfied with what you did this year. We have a good group of athletes, and we need to become better basketball players."
