Falcon girls step up for 2nd (PHOTOS)

GRUNDY CENTER – Three of Aplington-Parkersburg girls cross country's usual varsity crew were out ill last Thursday.

The Falcons still came away with a second-place finish out of 10 teams running at the Spartan Invitational at Town and Country Golf Course in Grundy Center.

A-P finished seven points behind Denver in the team standings, led by overall medalist Sophia Jungling's winning time of 18:44. Denver's top three finished 2-3-4 to help the Cyclones to victory.

Megan Johnson, Lily Hovenga and Sommer Stotler were not in the lineup last Thursday. Lia Hovenga finished seventh in 20:36, Maci Freund was 13th in 22:08, Karson DeGroote claimed 13th in 22:08 and Ella Luebbers was the No. 5 runner, clocking in at 22:10 for 15th place.

"We had some other girls that needed to compete and they did," A-P head coach Jason Berkey said. "It was good to see those girls run without some of those other girls and have an opportunity to go out and compete at the varsity level."
