Kalkwarf's TD lifts Falcons to homecoming win (PHOTOS)

PARKERSBURG – Carter Cuvelier took a chance on Friday night.

Aplington-Parkersburg football needed a score to overtake Iowa Falls-Alden late in the fourth quarter, and on fourth down, Cuvelier took the snap and saw Jacob Kalkwarf get open immediately.

When Cuvelier launched the throw, the Cadets converged on Kalkwarf as he ran his route toward the home sideline.

Just minutes earlier, Kalkwarf's muffed punt return gave the Cadets the field position necessary to put A-P down three points.

But on this homecoming night in Parkersburg, Kalkwarf would go out a hero and hauled in Cuvelier's pass as he sprinted into the front corner of the end zone, the eventual game-winning touchdown in a 21-17 triumph for the Falcons in Parkersburg.

"He had every reason in the world to have his head down after that muffed punt," A-P head coach Alex Pollock said. "But he came back and made a great play when we needed him most."

The 21-yard touchdown, followed by the third of three-successful point-after attempts by homecoming king Junior Bodden, helped A-P improve to a 2-1 overall record. Iowa Falls-Alden fell to 1-2 overall.

Cuvelier also became A-P's all-time leading passer by the end of the night, with his 2,122 career passing yards passing the old mark belonging to Alec Thompson, throwing 2,057 yards from 2006 to 2008.

A senior in his third year at quarterback for the Falcons, Cuvelier was 10-of-20 passing for 122 yards, a touchdown and an interception on Friday.

"There was pretty good coverage on the play," Cuvelier said of the touchdown throw. "Gotta give a ton of credit to Jacob K., he made a really nice catch on that play, offensive line did a good job of protecting and it was just a good play all around."
