Local Model Aviation Club holds fly-in at New Hartford

A group of local model aviation pilots - known as the Black Hawk Radio Control Pilots - took to the skies this weekend, hosting two fly-in days at their club flying field on Highway T55 just south of New Hartford.

Parkersburg resident Lee Birch and his son Matthew were one of many spectators who stopped by for the club’s Saturday fly-in, where club members trained them on how to fly model aircrafts.

“We saw a flyer for the event and decided we’d come check it out,” Lee said. “[Matthew and I] are interested in planes and we just started working on one last winter. We bought plans online and are building it ourselves with 3-D printed parts. We just got it all put together, but neither of us are really sure how to fly it, so we figured we’d come [to the flying field] and see what it’s like.”

Lee says he enjoys the building aspect, and Matthew says he enjoys the flying aspect of model planes. Both of them agreed that it’s a fun way for them to spend time together.
