Local A-P high schooler attends Global Youth Institute

It was a true meeting of the minds at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates in Des Moines late last month, as 200 students from across the state, country and globe gathered together to discuss the world’s most pressing challenges in hunger and poverty.

The program that brought the students there was the 2018 Global Youth Institute - a prestigious three day conference that offers students a chance to engage with global leaders in science, policy and industry to find solutions to the complex issue of global food insecurity.

Diana Mulder, a junior at Aplington-Parkersburg High School, was one of the select few students invited to the conference - and the only A-P student to ever be invited to the conference - thanks to her research on how biofortified cassava root could help the malnutrition crisis in Mozambique, Africa.

“I grew up on a farm just outside of town, so my interest in agriculture started out early,” Mulder said.
