New Miracle League field hosts first scrimmage in Parkersburg

Eight years ago, a group of five community members committed to bringing a positive change to Parkersburg started meeting for breakfast weekly and putting together plans for a state of the art baseball, softball and soccer complex. But it came with a special twist—they were going to build the area’s only Miracle Field.

Fast forward to 2018, and the work of the members— Dan Bruns, Tara Miller, Dave Cleary, Klay Hoppenworth and Matt Waller—has most certainly paid off. The $2.2 million project is almost complete except for a concession stand and bathroom, and on Sunday, the Miracle League, which is specifically designated for kids with disabilities and includes the entire Cedar Valley, held its first scrimmage at the new location near the water tower.

“I was onboard right away,” said Hoppenworth, an A-P graduate and current teacher who moved to Urbandale for two years during his elementary school years. “I wanted baseball to be as big as Urbandale for Parkersburg.”
