One big family: D-NH robotics team continues to grow in fourth year

It’s become a bit of a cliché in this day and age, but the Dike-New Hartford High School robotics team—the “Moonshot Slaybots,” as they’re better known—has become a family over the last few years. And more importantly, members are having a blast competing while learning skills that will transfer over to the job market when they need them in the future.

Last week, they were hard at work on assembling this year’s robot and prepping for an upcoming regional contest in Cedar Falls. The district’s technology integrationist Joanna Seymour, who also serves as the lead mentor for the team, can remember the first two competitions and how much her squad has improved.

“We weren’t as happy with our performance because there were a lot of things about it that we just hadn’t had time to test,” Seymour said. “So we got kind of eaten alive at regionals.”

Last year, the students finally reached a point where they could work with their own designs instead of following a template, and they broke through to finish in the top half of the field of over 60 teams. And from here on out, the sky’s the limit.
