A-P approves boys soccer in 2020: Program contingent on finding sharing partner

After months of back and forth discussions at monthly meetings, the Aplington-Parkersburg school board voted unanimously last Wednesday night to approve a new boys soccer program beginning in the spring of 2020, as long as A-P finds another school to enter a sharing agreement.

For the sake of numbers, Athletic Director Jason Berkey and Superintendent Jon Thompson told the board and attendees— including Parkersburg Mayor Perry Bernard, who has led the push to revive the program— that a shared team was the most feasible option moving forward. A-P previously fielded a squad until 2013, when it was shut down due to low numbers.

In Berkey’s opinion, an ideal number of players out is 25 to field both varsity and junior varsity teams, and Bernard indicated that he had at least 24 or 25 potential players either committed or strongly interested in competing at the high school level.
