A-P board approves raises for several staff members

The Aplington- Parkersburg Board of Education approved raises for support staff, middle school principal Brian Buseman and Superintendent Jon Thompson during Monday night’s regular monthly meeting.

At five percent, Buseman will receive the largest pay increase, which board members said would bring him more in line with the average pay for his position, and Thompson will receive a raise of 1.5 percent. The support staff will receive a two percent bump, and while board members acknowledged the desire to pay competitive wages, they also suggested doing it in a gradual and fiscally responsible manner.

“It’s going to be a marathon. It’s not going to be a sprint to get them back to where they’re (needing to be) at,” board member Derek Harken said.

Music teachers Jeff Bieber and Thom Mahler thanked the board for its support of a recent trip to Florida and shared that it was a great experience—despite some bus issues in Cedar Rapids along the way.

“You can plan everything to a T, and it never goes as planned,” they said.
