A-P boys roll, girls battle ranked Spartans in hoops debut

Falcon boys roll over Grundy Center

The Falcons pulled away in the second-half of a season-opening romp over the Spartans in Grundy Center last Monday.

Carter Cuvelier scored 28 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, with Grant Truax contributing 18 points and four steals and Alec Oberhauser scoring 16 points with eight rebounds, eight assists and six steals.

A-P hit 10 total 3-pointers on Monday, leading 27-15 after the first quarter but only pushing the lead to 46-32 at halftime as the Spartans nearly played the Falcons even prior to half, including getting to the line for 15 free throws compared to just three attempts at the charity stripe for the Falcons.

"We fouled too much in that first half," A-P head coach Aaron Thomas said. "We've got to get to the line more than our opponent and it seemed like we built a lead and then we took the first 3-pointer we could find instead of attacking gaps. We want to be patient. But then our guys score 92 points. With such an experienced group, maybe I expect perfection, but you're never going to have perfection. I think the effort top-to-bottom was good."

A-P falls short against ranked Spartans

A last-second three-point attempt from Sophia Jungling was just off the mark as the 2A No. 9 Spartans beat back a persistent Falcons team in Grundy Center last Monday.

Jenna Bruns led A-P with 18 points and five rebounds, with Gabbi Kampman adding 12 points off the bench on four 3-pointers and Jaycie Ellis also coming off the bench, contributing eight points and five rebounds.

The Spartans scored the first 16 points of the game, which provided enough cushion to hold off the Falcons (0-1), who outscored Grundy Center 47-34 the rest of the way.

"I think we were a little shell-shocked against the ninth-ranked team in the state," A-P head coach Jason Berkey said of the Spartans' quick start. "But I couldn't be more proud of the girls, they battled back, were resilient and showed a lot of heart."
