A-P Kids Club teaches character building to elementary students

A unique program at the A-P Elementary School – A-P Kids Club – is teaching local youngsters things they wouldn’t necessarily get in a regular class; things like leadership, team-building, relationship- building and being fair and kind.

Kara Spahn, the curriculum director for the program, says Kids Club focuses on teaching the students the basic pillars of character, such as: fairness, caring, trustworthiness, respect, responsibility and citizenship. The program also aims to bring students together, and help them get to know each other better while promoting leadership and teamwork.

“The program has been around for a while, but this year it looks a little different because of the restructuring [at the elementary schools],” she said. “We’re trying to focus on bringing students together, and helping them get to know each other to prepare them when they move on to middle school and high school. It’s nice to see the walls come down when the students are all mixed together outside of their normal classes.”
