A-P students work to rebuild, restore vintage truck for class project

Students at Aplington-Parkersburg High School are ditching the textbooks to take on a unique, hands-on project that involves restoring a rusty, old truck to its former glory, while adding a few touches of their own.

The project is being taken on by a handful of students in Industrial Technology instructor Brian Surratt’s small engines class.

“In the past, our class has focused mainly on working with lawnmowers or golf carts brought in by community members. We would do services on golf carts a lot, like changing the oil and doing minor repairs, but in the winter months nobody is using their golf cart so it can be hard to schedule stuff for them to do during that time,” Surratt said.

Looking for a unique, new project for students, Surratt stumbled upon an old 1948 Chevy S10 body for sale and decided it would be the perfect project for his students to restore the old truck to its former glory.

“I always try to come up with unique projects for us to do, and when I found [this truck] I thought it would be perfect,” he said. “With this, it’s a larger scale project we can work on in our spare time, or through the slower winter months. The students are really excited to get to work on the project.”
