Pheasants Forever Youth Hunt held

The 2019 Shane Beckman Memorial Youth Hunt was held on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Reiher Family Farms and the Eric Bixby farm near Allison, sponsored by North Butler Pheasants Forever and Butler County Pheasants Forever.

The morning started at 8 a.m. at the Bixby farm with a pre-hunt safety meeting where DNR Officer Jordan Hansen gave safety tips and explained hunting laws and how to hunt with dogs and in larger groups in the field.

A successful hunt, according to Hansen, doesn’t depend on what the hunter brings home; it depends on everyone coming home safely.

Eleven participants ages 12-15, who had completed hunter safety courses, were accompanied in the field by mentors, including seven college students from the Hawkeye Tech Natural Resources program, who were present with instructor Ryan Kurtz. The youth hunted pheasants and quail that had been released in CRP featuring native flowers and grasses on the Jason Reiher farm.

“There was a little bit of rain pretty much the whole time we were out there,” said par-ent/mentor Scott Schild of Clarksville. “Dianna had a good time and got her first pheasant.”
