Protest comes to Bill Dix’s Shell Rock home

“Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Bill Dix has got to go,” was the cry of perhaps 100 to 150 protestors who gathered on the usually quiet, snow-covered street in front of Bill Dix’s home in Shell Rock on Saturday.

The protest, organized by the Teamster Local 238 union in Waverly, drew union faithful and liberals from across the state, and was supported by Butler County Democrats from towns including Parkersburg, Shell Rock, Dumont and Clarksville.

“I’m proud to be here. We’re not going to take it anymore,” said Toby Paone from Davenport.

Protestors braved temperatures hovering around zero for a variety of reasons. Topics of concern were collective bargaining legislation, education, veterans, Medicaid, IPERS, healthcare and insurance, Kirsten Anderson and women’s rights, and polluted waterways.

“I think there were some ideologically-driven decisions made, poor decisions, like privatizing Medicaid, and just the whole tenor of the state government at this point is hostile to Iowans,” said Joe Marron of Iowa City. “It’s going to kill more Iowans than Al-Queda ever did—the policies they’re putting in place.”
