Remembering Mitch Nordmeyer: A Tribute

Former Butler County EMA Coordinator Mitch Nordmeyer was a man who met the unexpected with strength and courage. It didn’t matter what hour of the day or night disaster struck, he was there with boots on the ground to lend a helping hand. His passing at the age of 56 sent shock waves throughout Butler County.

Nordmeyer was found unresponsive at his Iowa Homeland Security work desk the morning of Friday, Jan. 25. Lengthy efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, according to Butler County Sheriff Jason Johnson, and preliminary indications were a massive heart attack. Nordmeyer died with his boots on.

He is remembered by friends and family as someone who was always there to help in time of need.

From Greene, Nordmeyer served as Butler County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator from July 2009 to March 31, 2018 when he took a job as state training officer for the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
