Self selected as 4-year All-State vocalist

PARKERSBURG – Only three A-P students have ever been selected as an All-State Vocalist all four years of their high school career, and one of them is Senior Zach Self of Aplington.

Last weekend, Self attended his fourth and final All-State Music Festival, where he sang with 600 other students from around the state.

“It’s definitely a great experience, and a lot of fun to be a part of that,” Self said. “I’ve met a lot of people, and I’ve made some new friends. Everyone who’s there worked so hard to be there, and it means a lot to be a part of that.”

Self admits he was pretty indifferent about singing for much of his life, and says he never really thought he’d end up going as far with vocal music as he has.

“I never did choir in middle school, but I ended up joining in high school and really found a love for it,” he said. “The summer before my freshman year I was detasseling with Mr. Bieber [A-P’s vocal music instructor], and singing by myself in the field. He came up to me and told me I should join choir and try out for All-State. If it wasn’t for that, I don’t think I would have gone at all.”
