Soccer field dispute continues for A-P school board

Soccer parent Deb Oldenburger expressed frustration with the handling of her request to move the girls’ team’s home games from Aplington to Parkersburg during Monday night’s regular school board meeting.

The board, however, held firm and opted instead to move forward with a plan that will allocate funding for a host of upgrades at the Aplington facility.

Superintendent Jon Thompson, in particular, opined that he believed the Falcons should keep some of their sporting events in Aplington and that playing at the “Sacred Acre” could jeopardize the condition of the field.

“I just think that’s the right thing to do,” Thompson said. “The condition of the field over here in the spring is better than the field in Parkersburg and will delay the recovery for fall football.”

Oldenburger countered that Thompson and the board considered soccer less important than football and wondered aloud why athletic director Jason Berkey and high school principal Aaron Thomas instructed her to approach them if they wouldn’t even hold a vote on the matter.
