Teacher spotlight: Haren handles business at A-P

PARKERSBURG - For 22 years, Mark Haren has taught Business at Aplington-Parkersburg High School, making him the longest tenured teacher at the school - and he doesn’t plan on going anywhere soon.

“There’s no better district I could’ve chose, and I can’t imagine working anywhere else,” Haren said. “I wake up everyday, and I’m excited to come to school; I can honestly say I love my job.”

Haren grew up in Texas and moved to Grundy Center when he was in middle school. After graduating from Grundy Center High School, he attended Central College and got a degree in business.

After about six years working in the private sector, Haren decided he wanted to pursue teaching. So, he got his teaching certificate from UNI and landed a job teaching business at A-P, where he’s been ever since.

“I started teaching because I always loved high school, and loved the atmosphere of being at school,” he said. “My wife, Susan, also teaches; she teaches at Lincoln Elementary in Cedar Falls. We both love teaching, and I like being able to work with students and see them progress from their freshman year to their senior year, and see how much they grow.”
