UNI's Ellis ready to get back on the field

Nick Ellis lives for the year-round commitment to the University of Northern Iowa football team.

There's no comparison in Ellis' mind for the feeling of starting at offensive line for the first four games of last season.

After ankle surgery between the 2017 and 2018 seasons on his left ankle, Ellis, then a redshirt sophomore, seemed poised for a breakout season.

This time, a right ankle injury sidelined Ellis' progress.

"I thought I'd be able to come back this time," Ellis said. "I kept fighting, kept fighting. … They said I needed surgery."

Undeterred, the Aplington-Parkersburg alum has been hard at work since leaving the operating room to pick up where he left off. As of UNI football media day's last Wednesday, head coach Mark Farley considers Ellis the starter at right guard.
