Last week was a frustrating time for Butler County Public Health when a recommended pause on administration of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine forced the rescheduling of much awaited one-shot clinics.

After weeks of waiting for a shipment of vaccine and scheduling clinics with area manufacturers, last week's clinics had to be abruptly postponed when reports of a rare blood clotting complication resulted in the CDC and FDA recommending a temporary pause on the vaccine's use.

It's not known when the Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be cleared for use again, however Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, that a some form resumption could be recommended on Friday.

"I hope that's true," said Jennifer Becker, Director of Butler County Public Health. "Then we can get those rescheduled that we postponed."

In the meantime, regular Moderna clinics have continued in the county, with some manufacturing workers opting to start their two-shot sequence with Moderna rather than wait for J&J clinics to resume.

Along with their standard boost clinic on Tuesday, the county is trying something new this week for their Thursday prime clinic, scheduling an evening clinic from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

"Hopefully we can catch some of the people that are at work during the daytime," said Becker.

As of Monday, April 19, approximately 10,600 doses of vaccine have been administered to Butler County residents, with 4,440 completing their two-dose vaccine series and an additional 266 receiving a one-dose vaccine.

A total of 1,625 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the county, increasing the county total in the last week by seven cases.

In Butler County, 7,083 individuals have been tested at some point during the pandemic, with a total of 28,885 tests performed on Butler County residents overall. In the last 14 days, 1.5% of total tests have been positive for the virus.

No additional COVID-19 related deaths have been reported in the county, keeping the county total at 34.
