Jungling wins 4th NICL cross country championship (PHOTOS)

JESUP – Aplington-Parkersburg senior Sophia Jungling completed a clean sweep of North Iowa Cedar League cross country titles as a varsity runner with her fourth-consecutive championship win at Jesup Golf and Country Club last Thursday, Oct. 17.

The UNI commit crossed the finish line in 18 minutes and 58 seconds, one of five total all-conference runners for the Falcons. A-P came up just short in the team standings, three points shy of Denver's winning total of 64.

"I felt strong, and it was a beautiful day outside," Jungling said. "I went out there fast and knew I wanted to separate myself from the beginning."

Jungling was 30 seconds faster than Denver's Amber Homan. Dike-New Hartford sophomore Taylor Kvale was third in 19:32.

"Each mile marker, I wanted to mentally tell myself to pick it up a little bit," Jungling said. "I don't know if I did that, but that was the goal, and also run a strong, consistent race throughout."

Lia Hovenga placed 10th in 20:33 to finish as a first-team all-conference runner in her freshman season. Megan Johnson and Maci Freund were 12th and 20th, respectively, to earn second-team status. Sommer Stotler was an honorable mention recipient after a 25th-place run. Lily Hovenga and Karson DeGroote were 33rd and 34th, respectively.

"I had to race for the 10th spot and it was very competitive," Lia Hovenga said. "I wanted to work hard my first year. There wasn't a time to beat yet, so I just went off my first times and kept getting better after that."

CHICO HONORABLE MENTION: Miguel Latas Chico earned all-NICL honorable mention with a 21st-place run at Jesup on Thursday, leading Aplington-Parkersburg with a 17:54 clocking.
