Mary Ann Bergman, age 85
Mary Ann Bergman, age 85, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Edward William and Dorothy Evelyn (Kramer) Karsjens, on December 5, 1939, in Aplington, Iowa. She attended a country school, Beaver Township #2 , near Stout, Iowa, and graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1958.
On March 3, 1962, Mary Ann Karsjens was united in marriage with Donald Lee Bergman at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Parkersburg, where she was baptized and became a member. The couple made their home for a few years near Buck Grove and then moved to town in Parkersburg. To this union five children were born, Susan, Cary, Clint, Brent and Jill. They remained living in Parkersburg their married life where they enjoyed living in various homes. Through the years Mary Ann had many local jobs in Parkersburg. The two most recent were at Kwik Star and Brother’s Market. She really didn’t retire until just a couple of years ago.
Mary Ann was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Parkersburg. She enjoyed taking communion to members’ homes as a Eucharistic Minister and she also helped on serving committees, especially for funerals. In her earlier years she helped deliver Meals On Wheels in Parkersburg. She especially loved spending time with her dog, Abby. Mary Ann enjoyed playing cards with her friends and family and going to the casino. She enjoyed cooking and baking and some of her families’ favorites were her breads, donuts and cinnamon rolls.
Mary Ann passed away on Monday, December 9, 2024, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, from complications of cancer. She was preceded in death by a son, Brent Bergman; parents, Edward and Dorothy Karsjens; a sister, Alma Raber; and father-in-law, Carl Bergman.
Mary Ann is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Don; four children, Susan (Jim) Schooley of Altoona, Iowa, Cary (Hallie) Bergman of Swan, Iowa, Clint Bergman of Waterloo, Iowa, and Jill (Stacey) Witter of Mustang, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence (June) Karsjens of Parkersburg; a sister, Yvonne (William) Keller of Dike, Iowa; Kristi Karsjens, Cedar Falls; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Kent, Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, December 13, 2024, at Holy Family Parish St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Parkesburg, with Fr. Craig Steimel officiating. The lector was Mary Sullivan. Amy Truax was the organist and Stan Thompson sang “On Eagles Wings” and “Amazing Grace”. The burial was held at St Patrick’s Cemetery in Parkersburg with Aaron Shera, Tyler Schooley and Tyler Bergman serving as Honorary Urnbearers.
