A-P state track notebook: Freund debuts on Blue Oval

DES MOINES – Maci Freund admits Thursday wasn't her ideal debut in Des Moines.

Freund had put in the hard work to make it in her freshman season with Aplington-Parkersburg, though, and that meant plenty after Freund finished the 2A girls 400-meter dash state championship in 11th place in 1:01.72.

"I really wanted to make this at the beginning of the year," Freund said. "It meant a lot to be here today ad be able to compete and represent A-P."

Jordyn Pester of MVAOCOU won in 56.63. Freund finished about a second out of the top eight with Osage's Brenna Jacobs finishing in eighth in 1:00.35.

Freund was in Pester's heat and knew it'd be a battle to keep up.

"It was really nervewracking," Freund said. "I knew I had to catch up and just follow the whole time and they just got me. I got tired."

Freund is scheduled to run as part of the distance medley on Friday in Des Moines. The event will run at approximately 2:40 p.m.

Also tomorrow:

– A-P's Christian Olson competes in the 2A boys high jump

– A-P boys will run in the distance medley relay final at approximately 5:40 p.m.
