The Associated Press recognizes former A-P basketball star Chelsea Poppens as Honorable Mention All-American. Poppens is a junior forward for the Cyclones.

The Butler County Rural Electric Cooperative celebrates its 75th anniversary.

A-P sophomore Danielle Eisentrager is one of five finalists in the Our Iowa magazine photography contest. Her photo captures a horse and rider in motion.

The Aplington Public Library, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Titanic disaster, sets up a display in the library. Kiddos from KidsQuest visit the display to learn about the valiant acts of heroism and the tragic loss connected with the event.

April 10, 2002

Fred Maifeld, President of Iowa State Bank of Clarksville, announces that the Iowa Division of Banking and the FDIC approved the bank's application to establish a branch in Parkersburg. The approval allows the bank to set up a temporary office in the industrial park.

Jonathan Wangler of Parkersburg wins the State Free-Throw Championship sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Wangler competed at the 13-year old level, making 90 percent of his free-throws.

In response to the success of a previous grant that enabled Parkersburg to rehabilitate nine area homes, the city successfully applies for  an additional Community Block Development Grant grant for $423,000 to rehabilitate 12 homes within city limits that qualify.

April 8, 1992

The IPS Electric office moves from its old facility in the First State Bank building on the south edge of Parkersburg to its new office on Main Street.

To celebrate her 80th birthday, Jennie Bertram of Parkersburg donates $100 toward the purchase of a new defibrillator for the city’s ambulance service.

Vocational Ag students from New Hartford and Parkersburg tour the Bob Jansen farm near Sinclair to learn about no-till farming methods.

Lisa Columbus of Greene and Jeffrey Badger of Parkersburg place 1st and 2nd respectively in the Right to Life’s local chapter oratorical contest. Both will go on to compete in the state competition in Des Moines in the spring.

April 7, 1982

Jeff Larison becomes the new Assistant Vice President at Parkersburg State Bank.

Forty farmers from Germany visit Huisman Implement in Aplington. The group is touring the U.S. learning of new farming and equipment innovations.

The Parkersburg Chamber of Commerce holds a ribbon cutting ceremony for A-Z Feed Additives. A-Z is located east of town in the former Diekman Electronics building.

Aplington seniors Randy Peters and Brad Lindeman are selected for All-State.

 

50 Years Ago

April 5, 1972

Renovations take place at the Historical Home. The primary project is the renovation of the main room downstairs.

Bundled up in their winter coats, Paula Wagner, Trica Carroll, Holly Jongekyk and Karen Carroll brave the cold to participate in the Parkersburg Easter egg hunt.

New Hartford starts a new chapter of the Lions Club. The Club elects Ned Simcox as its first president.

Palmer’s advertises 10 pound bags of Russet potatoes for 69 cents.
