Virgil Lindaman

Virgil Merle Lindaman, age 96, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Arnold and Minnie (Abbas) Lindaman on May 2, 1924, at his home in Parkersburg.  Virgil attended rural country schools around the Parkersburg area.   Virgil served in the United States Army during World War II from February 1946 until he received an honorable discharge in August 1947.  After Virgil returned from the service, he worked as a machinist at Clay Equipment in Cedar Falls, Iowa. 

On May 23, 1953, Virgil was united in marriage with Lylas Althea Dring in Webster City, Iowa.  The couple made their home in Parkersburg and Virgil owned Virgil’s Fix-It Shop in downtown Parkersburg.  In 1963, the family moved to Marshalltown, Iowa, where Virgil worked for Montgomery Wards service department and later at Fisher Control as a machinist until his retirement in 1987.  Lylas passed away in 1999, and in 2000, Virgil returned to Parkersburg.  In 2008, Virgil lost everything in the Parkersburg E-F5 tornado.     

Virgil was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg and the American Legion.  Virgil was honored to be chosen as Legion Member of the Year in 2004 and 2013.  He also was a member of the AMVETS Post #102.  In 2015, Virgil was chosen as Parkersburg Citizen of the Year.  He loved tinkering and fishing.  Some of Virgil’s favorite times were spent attending auctions and going to coffee with the boys.  Before his declining health, Virgil loved visiting his family in Arizona and Colorado.

Virgil died Friday, July 24, 2020, at Unity Point Hospice in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. Virgil is preceded in death by his wife of 46 years on May 17, 1999, Lylas; his parents, Arnold and Minnie Lindaman; and his brothers, Duane and Vernon “Tonto” Lindaman.

Virgil is survived by two daughters, Debra (Jim) Phillips of Loveland, Colorado and Marilyn (Mike) Jones of Mesa, Arizona; four grandchildren, Shelly (Todd) Hedgespeth, Molly (Chuck) Callaway, Lauri (Al) Holstad and Cody Jones; five great-grandchildren; one great great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 29, 2020, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg.  Pastor Kent Wallace officiated the service.  Pianist was Jill Pliner and she accompanied the congregation as they sang “How Great Thou Art” and “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”.  Tom Teeple provided special music as he sang “Amazing Grace”.  Burial was held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg with Dave Dreyer, Todd Hedgespeth, Al Holstad, Neal Schrage, Bill Hammar and Chuck Callaway serving as Casketbearers.  Military rites were conducted by Parkersburg American Legion Post #285.

Visitation was held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home, and one hour before services at the church.  Memorials may be directed to the family.  Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg was in charge of arrangements.  Online condolences may be left at www.redman-schwartz.com
