Aplington council approves snow parking fine increase
The Aplington City Council approved an ordinance amending fines for snow parking violations as part of regular business on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
Violations are now fined at $25, up from $5, with a $5 penalty for fines not paid within 30 days, in accordance with State of Iowa Code.
Those parking on streets, alleys or roadways while snow plows are in operation will be found in violation of the ordinance. Residents are encouraged to find private parking until snow removal operations are done.
The council also discussed a contract bill from the Butler County Sheriff’s Office. Aplington police chief Matt Lind questioned if the city was being charged for just one officer, as it appeared it may have been more. Lind did not receive a response from Sheriff Johnson in time for the meeting, and the contract bill approval was tabled until the issue could be cleared up.
Area township trustees were in attendance on Wednesday with questions and concerns regarding the proposed new building for Aplington fire, which has been proposed to be built in the vacant lot across from Casey’s in Aplington.
The council explained the process of public bidding on a building over $100,000, with a licensed engineer required to prepare the plans and specifications for an estimated total cost. Funding would need to be secured before the process of building.
After this discussion, Mayor Jason Mehmen noted he will make contacts on engineering needs for the building.
Butler County REC representatives were also in attendance at Wednesday’s meeting, thanking the city for their business and good working relations.
In other business, the council:
- Received a dividend check from Greg Nevenhoven, LSB Insurance;
- Approved Resolution 530-23 approving the maximum property tax dollars for budget year 2024;
- Set Wednesday, March 8 for a public hearing on the proposed budget for fiscal year 2024.
