Aplington-Parkersburg voters turn down school bond issue

PARKERSBURG – Voters in the Aplington-Parkersburg Community School District soundly defeated an issue that would have raised property taxes so that attendance centers in both Aplington and Parkersburg could receive renovations.

Unofficial totals showed 1,158 yes votes to 1,412 no votes. The 45.1 percent support was far below the 60 percent + 1 vote needed to pass the measure. The measure failed to reach the winning margin in any of the five precincts that make up the school district, with only voters in the Aplington precinct casting more yes votes than no.

Aplington voters cast 426 yes votes against 334 no, comprising 56 percent support. Parkersburg voters were strongly opposed to the issue, casting 488 yes votes (39.1 percent) to 759 no. A-P School District voters in the Dumont District rejected the measure by a 122-86 margin while A-P School District voters in the Allison precinct rejected the measure by a 49-46 margin.

All results are preliminary and unofficial. Official results will be released once they are canvassed by the Grundy County Board of Supervisors next week.
