Area plans for Memorial Day

AREA – Communities in the Eclipse coverage area are preparing for Memorial Day on Monday, May 30.

 

Parkersburg

The American Legion Post 285 will have a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 30. The wreath ceremony will be at 8:15 a.m. at the Depot Park. The Catholic Ceremony will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery at 8:40 a.m., the Oak Hill Cemetery Ceremony will begin at 9 a.m.

The guest speaker in Parkersburg will be Michael Van Ness, whose grandfather, Major General John B. Anderson of Parkersburg, fought in World War I and II and is the subject of two books penned by Van Ness - “General in Command: The Life of Major General John B. Anderson from Iowa Farm to Command of the Largest Combat Corps in World War Two” and soon to be published “To the Front: Grandfathers’ Stories in the Cause of Freedom”.

Post 285 will also host their usual breakfast on Memorial Day from 7 a.m. to noon at the Vets Building in Parkersburg.

The Sons of the American Legion will hold a one-day raffle with tickets being sold during the Memorial Day breakfast. The winner will be drawn at 1 p.m. and win a Heritage six-shot Rough Rider Handgun. The winner must pass a background check but need not be present to win.

 

Aplington

Aplington AMVETS Memorial Day activities will begin on Sunday, May 29 at 1:30 p.m. with a service at Washington Reformed Cemetery, and a service at Bethel Reformed Cemetery to follow.

The Memorial Day parade is at 10 a.m., with Memorial Day Services at Pleasant View Cemetery to follow. Travis Fleshner, A-P’s new superintendent and veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, will be the guest speaker.

 

New Hartford

The New Hartford American Legion is planning on its traditional ceremony for Memorial Day at the Cemetery. There will also be a small ceremony at the Veterans Memorial before the usual “walk” to the cemetery.

The Veterans’ Flag Service will be at New Hartford Veterans Park by the Community Building at 9 a.m. on May 30. Refreshments will be served at the cemetery following the dedication.
