D-NH volleyball wins Ankeny tourney

ANKENY – The top ranked team in Class 2A took down several ranked 5A schools en route to the Ankeny Centennial tournament title on Saturday.

D-NH defeated Class 5A No. 1 Iowa City Liberty, No. 4 Ankeny Centennial, No. 6 West Des Moines Valley, No. 10 Dowling Catholic, No. 12 Sioux City East and Clinton, improving to 9-0 on the season.

The Wolverines’ match with the Liberty Lightning was the only one of their matches to go to three sets on the day - D-NH dropped the first set, 25-17, but rallied to win 25-17 in the second set and lock down the win with a 15-13 triumph in the third set.

Payton Petersen led the Wolverines with 19 kills against the Lightning and Jadyn Petersen added 10 kills with a team-leading 15 digs. Madelyn Norton distributed 33 assists to the D-NH offense and was 9-of-10 from the service line with two aces.

The tournament win came on the heels of beating three more ranked teams at a Thursday quadrangular at West Delaware - the Wolverines swept 3A No. 11 Independence and 2A No. 5 Wapsie Valley and won a three-set thriller with 3A No. 2 West Delaware.

D-NH kicks off NICL Central play at Hudson on Thursday, Sept. 2, and takes on the Shirley Ryan Tournament in Mount Vernon this Saturday.

Thursday scores: D-NH def. West Delaware 19-25, 31-29, 15-10; D-NH def. Independence 25-13, 25-9; D-NH def. Wapsie Valley 25-14, 25-19.
