Dairy Princesses got moo-vin’ this summer

Alli Mohn of Shell Rock and Haily Backer of Greene are the 2022-23 Butler County Dairy Princess and Alternate Princess, respectively. They spent the summer promoting dairy in Butler County.

The Iowa State Dairy Princess Program gives young ladies ages 16-24 years old with a passion for dairy an opportunity to represent Iowa Dairy farmers by sharing information about the role of dairy in healthy eating habits and how dairy farmers care for their cows, community, and land.

After being crowned in May and some training in June, both Alli & Haily quickly hopped into and onto cars, trucks, and fire engines in area parades. Throwing out cow hats, candy, and smiles, children of all ages were delighted to spot the dairy princesses.

The Butler County Fair found them distributing ribbons during the dairy show and for Haily, showing her dairy goats for the last time after graduating in May.

Most of the summer found Alli serving up a favorite dairy product, ice cream, at the Shell Rock Scoop. Haily helped Bremer County 4-H with their youth Dairy Day Camp in June.

As summer came to a close Haily headed to Des Moines to compete for the Iowa State Dairy Princess title, as Alli still is a year too young to compete. Haily represented herself and Butler County well by winning the Public Speaking Contest with her speech about the importance of animal well-being in FFA members’ fair projects.

Alli is continuing her interest in dairy by participating in the WSR FFA dairy judging team this fall as a junior. Haily has started her freshman year at Drake University in Des Moines. Both Alli & Haily will continue their reign until Spring 2023.

Those interested in having the current princesses participate in an event or know a young lady with an interest in dairy who would like to run in 2023, please contact Lynn Bolin at 319-529-3421.
