Dean William Karsjens, 54, of Charles City, passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at Floyd Co. Medical Center in Charles City, due to complications of pneumonia. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at the Sietsema Funeral Home, 501 10th Ave., Ackley. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Dean William Karsjens was born on May 7, 1968, the son of Harold (Bud) and Geraldine (Gid) Abbas Karsjens at rural Ackley, Iowa. Dean was baptized in the Ackley Christian Reformed Church on May 26, 1968 by the Rev. Herman Solomons.

Dean attended River Hills School in Cedar Falls, Iowa for a short time before moving to and becoming a resident of Comprehensive Systems of Charles City, living at Crestview, Elma Home, Riching Home, Kaplan and Carlton group homes in Waterloo & Cedar Falls, and finally moving back to the Memories Unit at Comprehensive Systems in Charles City on August 20, 2013, where he was residing at the time of his last hospitalization. The staff at Comp Systems were a major part of Dean's life and were often referred to by his family as his "other family". Dean's family is forever grateful for their compassion and care of their brother throughout all of these years!!

Dean had a huge love and was passionate about tractors and never forgot where the implement shops were even long after the implement shop was no longer in existence. He was always a happy child, until you took away his toy tractors or told him it was time to come inside and he didn't want to!! He was very kind to those around him, except for when you wanted to shave him and he didn't want to be shaved! Dean was a favorite of the staff at Comp Systems and LOVED to be around them and a part of their conversations.

Dean is survived by his sisters Denise (Dale) Akkerman of Holland and Dawn (Chris) Shepard of Aplington, and his brothers Dan (Martha) Karsjens of Ackley and Doug (Kerri) Karsjens of Waverly, Iowa, 13 nieces and nephews, 11 great nieces and nephews, a stepmother, Karen Brouwer Karsjens of Aplington, and one aunt, Marie (John) Anderson of Aplington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepmother, a brother David Karsjens, his grandparents and several aunts and uncles.
