HUDSON – Dike-New Hartford boys track and field won the first-ever NICL “Mega Meet” title at Hudson on Thursday, the first meet to have all 16 eligible NICL schools competing in one meet to determine one true champion.

D-NH scored 139 points to finish ahead of Grundy Center (126) and Jesup (104). Aplington-Parkersburg was seventh with 35 points.

The Wolverines were led by two champions - Jerek Hall in the long jump, landing in the pit with a mark of 20 feet, 7.25 inches; and the 4x400 team of Michael Herber, Parker Latwesen, Nate Graves and Rhett Wardell that raced to the finish line in 3:27.97 to close out the meet.

D-NH scored twice in five individual events, including a 1-2 finish in the long jump, and finished no worse than fifth in the relay events.

For A-P, the 4x800 relay team of Gavin Thomas, Jack Eddy, Devin Davis and Sam Livingood secured a runner-up placing in the event named after former A-P coach Ed Thomas, clocking in at 8:35.44. Carson Troyna grabbed bronze in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 7.25 inches.

In the girls’ race, Denver eked out a win over Dike-New Hartford in the team standings, 127 points to 114. Aplington-Parkersburg was fifth with 55.5 points.

D-NH had three event titles on the night – Jadyn Petersen won the long jump title with a leap of 15 feet, 9 inches; Taylor Kvale won the 400 hurdles in 1:05.78 and was the anchor on the winning 4x400 team as the baton went from Petersen to Macie Graves to Ella Costello and Kvale in a time of 4:11.18.

A-P’s Olyvia Bellows won the high jump after clearing the bar at 5 feet, 2 inches. She was also the runner-up in the 100 hurdles in 16.77 and anchored the runner-up shuttle hurdle relay team - Shayla Barrett, Kinsey Mohwinkle, Avery Freund and Bellows completed the race in 1:12.67.

POSTSEASON: A-P and D-NH will meet again in Thursday’s Class 2A state-qualifying meet at Grundy Center. In addition to the Spartans, the Falcons and Wolverines will also see NICL schools Columbus, Denver, Jesup, Oelwein, South Hardin and Union; as well as Belmond-Klemme, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, and Eagle Grove. The top two placewinners in each event, plus the next eight fastest non-automatic-qualifier times from all eight district sites will advance to the state meet running from May 19-21 in Des Moines.
