Donald Frey

Donald “Donnie” Henry Frey, age 84, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, was born the son of Henry and Helen (Wubbena) Frey on June 3, 1936, at his home in rural Aplington, Iowa, in Butler County. Don attended Ripley Township Country School. Don enlisted in the United States Army National Guard in 1954 and served until he was honorably discharged in 1961.
On January 30, 1959, Don was united in marriage with Alda Rhea Koenen at the Bethel Reformed Church in rural Aplington. The couple made their first home in rural Aplington, where Don continued custom feed grinding. He farmed for three years and then returned to custom feed grinding. Don later worked at Farmer’s Feed and Grain, and Brandt Elevator both in Allison for 35 years, until he retired. He drove truck for D&B and Dumont Implement, after retirement.
Don was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Allison, where he served as an elder, and was always available to help whenever or wherever he was needed. Don was an active Gideon for many years. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and was a gentle, quiet soul. Don loved life and loved attending his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s events, and just loved being with them.
Don passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at his home in Cedar Falls, of natural causes. Don is preceded in death by his daughter, Karla Kaye Frey; his grandson, Daniel Stevenson; his parents; and his sister, Doris Johnson.
Don is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alda; two daughters, Sherri Peterson and Deanne (Tim) Ubben both of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren, Cody (Nicole) Ubben, Matthew (Ali) Stevenson, Cassi (James) Price and Karla Peterson; seven great-grandchildren, Jaden, Brandon & Kaitlyn Ubben, Henry & Charlotte Stevenson, Ella Ubben and Ivy Price.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 7, 2021, at Trinity Reformed Church in Allison. Pastors Jeremy Van Genderen and Dave Bartlett officiated the service. Denise Abbas accompanied the congregation as they sang “Amazing Grace” and “It Is Well With My Soul”. Randy Aalderks sang “I Can Only Imagine” and “Go Rest High On That Mountain”. Special music, “I Want To Stroll Over Heaven With You” sung by Alan Jackson was played. Burial was at Bethel Reformed Cemetery in rural Aplington, Iowa, with Josh Johnson, Shawn Koenen, Seth Koenen, Chad Johnson, Eric Trees and Scott Capper serving as Casketbearers. Military rites were conducted by Aplington AMVETS Post #102.
Visitation was from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at Redman Funeral & Cremation Services in Parkesburg. Memorials may be directed to the Gideon’s or the Cedar Valley Hospice.
