John Maitland

John L. Maitland, Sr. went to be with the Lord on November 26, 2020 at Cedar Valley Hospice with his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born January 29, 1945 in Bradgate, IA, to Thomas Maitland and Clara (Moehring) Maitland. John went to several schools while growing up. He graduated eighth grade from Joliet Middle School and high school from Crestwood High School in Cresco, IA. He started farming for his dad when he was 12 so farming crops and dairy farming always held a special place in his heart. He enjoyed studying up on tractors and cars from the 50s and 60s. He also enjoyed music from the 50s and 60s and was a history buff of that era. John also enjoyed camping with his family and thoroughly enjoyed watching stock car races of all kinds throughout his entire life. John was a very organized man who loved visiting and joking with his friends. He spent 38 years with Thermogas where he was promoted to manager for many years. He married Kerry Jo Johnson in 1963. They had five children: Mark (Marjorie) Maitland from Monroe, MI; Jean (Darrin) Smith of Stewartville, MN; John Jr. (Tammy) Maitland of Waterloo, IA; Brent (Aimee) Maitland of Cedar Rapids, IA; and Aaron (Noriko) Maitland of College Park, MD. John was a loving and courageous caregiver for his children and their mother for many years while she was stricken with multiple sclerosis. Kerry passed away in 2003. He married Linda Appell Alexander in 2005. His Surviving siblings are Roger (Jane) Maitland of Crossville, TN; Thomas Maitland of Joliet, IL; and Adah Hadenfeldt of Storm Lake, IA. John is survived by 15 grandchildren: Nicole Maitland, Danielle (Tyler) Reeves, Brianna (Zack) Gordon, Ashlyn Smith, Carissa Smith, Ryan Maitland, Brandon Maitland, Alison Maitland, Kyle Maitland, Grace Maitland, Hunter Maitland, Jack Maitland, Macy Maitland, Lisa Maitland, and Jacob Maitland. He is also survived by six step grandchildren: Brendan Alexander, Haley (Ben) Fienup, Samantha Alexander, Kensington Alexander, Erik Alexander, and Brennan Regan. John also has five great grandchildren: Avery Gordon, Briella Gordon, Carter Gordon, William Reeves, and Adalee Kopsa. Surviving in-laws include Thomas (Barbara) Johnson and David Johnson. John was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Clara, wife Kerry, brothers James and Darwin, and sister Dorothy Skovbo, A celebration of life will be planned at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
