Leonard Cecil Abkes, 80

Leonard Cecil Abkes, age 80, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Joseph and Bertha (Christopherson) Abkes on November 4, 1942, in Parkersburg.  Leonard graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1960.

Leonard lived in his parents’ home his entire life and worked with his father painting homes.  In his younger years, Leonard enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He also enjoyed playing cards with his family, especially with his cousin, Myrna Kluiter.  He loved visiting with family and attending the Abkes and Christopherson family reunions.  Leonard will be missed for his quiet personality and his love of his family.

On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, Leonard died at MercyOne – Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes.  Leonard is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Bertha Abkes.

Leonard is survived by several cousins, Theodore (Marie) Abkes of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Mary (Jon) Heitland of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Marcia (Steve) Stolte of Hiawatha, Iowa, Vinton Christopherson of Parkersburg, Howard Christopherson of Mason City, Iowa, and Myrna (LaVern) Kluiter of Parkersburg.

A graveside service was  held at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, June 26, 2023, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Austinville, Iowa.  Pastor Russell Boersma officiated the service.  Redman Funeral & Cremation Services, Parkersburg Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.  Online condolences may be left at www.redmanfuneral.com
