A-P cross country opens season at Maynes Grove

HAMPTON – The first competitive run of the season crossed the finish line at Maynes Grove last Thursday, Aug. 25, with Aplington-Parkersburg’s girls placing sixth and the Falcon boys finishing seventh.

A-P’s girls scored 136 points, a point behind Humboldt in fifth and only nine behind South Hardin in fourth. Clear Lake won the team title with 33 points.

Lia Hovenga paced the Falcon girls in 12th in 22:48. Ashley Schipper was 14th in 23:11 and Quinnlyn Schultz placed 27th in 24:47. Adison Williamson and Ella Luebbers rounded out the scoring runners for the Falcons in 36th and 47th, respectively.

The Falcon boys scored 218 points, 12 points behind Humboldt in sixth. Clear Lake also won the boys team title with 41 points.

Jesse Washington was the top runner for A-P in 19:36 for 18th place. Henry Reints was 45th in 21:26 and freshman Jonah Carney made his varsity debut in 47th in 21:46, followed closely by Kamdon Hoppenworth, 48th in 21:47. Evan Sheesley was the final scoring runner for the Falcons in 60th in 22:57.

A-P’s next competition is Thursday, Sept. 1 at the Pine Lake Run in Eldora.
