A-P duo earn all-NICL cross country spots

LA PORTE CITY – Aplington-Parkersburg’s Lia Hovenga and Ashley Schipper led the girls cross country team to a ninth-place finish at the NICL cross country meet at La Porte City Golf Course on Thursday, Oct. 13.

The Falcon duo earned honorable mention as part of the top-30 All-NICL runners - Hovenga finished 24th in 21:27 and Schipper was close behind in 25th in 21:33.

Dike-New Hartford’s Izzy Houts was a first-team All-NICL runner, finishing ninth in 20:22. Her Wolverine teammate, Elyse Folkerts, just missed on All-NICL recognition, placing 31st overall in 22:04; six seconds behind the cutoff for overall top-30.

The Wolverines scored 196 points to finish ahead of the Falcons in eighth. Denver won the team title with 47 points and Sumner-Fredericksburg’s Hillary Trainor was the individual winner in 19:19.

In the boys’ race, D-NH’s Tyler Nystel was the lone area All-NICL honoree, placing 27th in 18:34. D-NH finished eighth as a team, two points ahead of A-P, 251-253. Oelwein won the boys team title with 43 points, Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Kaden Lynch was the individual champion, completing the course in 16:27.

Jesse Washington was the fastest A-P finisher, taking 43rd place in 19:21. Kamdon Hoppenworth, Henry Reints, Evan Sheesley and Jonah Carney all finished just outside of the top 50, separated by a 16 second spread from Hoppenworth to Carney.

Of note in lower-level races, D-NH’s Payton Foster won the girls junior high race in 13:14.
