Elizabeth “Biz” Petersen of Aplington-Parkersburg High School was honored on April 11 as a Better Business Bureau Student of Integrity, one of five high school seniors out of 140 applicants to receive the honor.

Don Meester was named Lion of the Year in the Lions Club 34th Annual Ladies Night Banquet at United Methodist Church. Chris Luhring was a guest speaker highlighting the improvement plans to the Highway 14/57 corridor.

Parkersburg Pharmacy was burglarized on April 20 as part of a string of pharmacy burglaries in Iowa.

Laura Toben set an A-P golf record with a low round of 46 against Denver at Willow Run Golf Course.

Elizabeth Moore, a Parkersburg third grader, entered the Waverly newspaper Easter Coloring Contest and won the first place prize of 20 dollars.

May 1, 2002

A temporary facility for the new Iowa State Bank location in Parkersburg is opening soon in the Industrial Park on the east edge of Parkersburg.

Recently, A-P students were surveyed on their sleeping habits. Out of 229 students surveyed, only 84 get 8 or more hours of sleep per night.

Eighth grader Pam Strang broke the discus record at A-P with a throw of 90 feet, 1 inch. The previous record was Casey Spree’s 87-6 throw in 1994.

In the Wolverine Press: “Perhaps not in this generation, but soon enough, fossil fuels, oil, and natural gasses on Earth will become depleted, and the billions of people who use electrical energy will be forced to find alternative sources of power.”

April 29, 1992

Hank’s Huddle, a boys AAU basketball team made up of area players, including three from Aplington, won the 17-and-under state championship in Des Moines. Darian DeVries, Travis Schipper and Jared DeVries will be on the team that advanced to the national tournament.

Tamara Johnson, daughter of Duane and Carolyn Johnson, was crowned the 1992 Butler County Dairy Princess. Lisa Johnson of Clarksville was named alternate.

Cassi Johnson, daughter of Mike and Kristine Johnson, won the drawing at Denholm’s Jewelry for the Hallmark stuffed bunny. Emily Hoogestraat won a $10 gift certificate and a jar of jelly beans for guessing the correct amount of beans.

April 28, 1982

Richard and Mary Ann Ehmen will take over the ownership of Stout Grocery from Marg and Bill Snittjer effective May 1.

Gaylen Mulder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Mulder, received the FFA’s coveted Iowa Farmer Degree in ceremonies at the 54th annual Iowa FFA Leadership Conference in Cedar Rapids.

William P. Dion, an FBI agent working out of the Waterloo office, spoke with the Parkersburg Lions about the role of the FBI in crime investigation and answered questions from the Lions about his daily life.

Carolyn Young is the new manager of the Shamrock Restaurant and Lounge in Aplington. She is a graduate of Cedar Falls High School and UNI.

Out of a total of 48 entries, Aplington Senior High’s Band received 24 Division I ratings, 17 Division II ratings and seven Division III ratings in the 1982 State Solo and Small Ensemble Contest in Dumont.

April 26, 1972

The 1972 Butler County Fair will be headlined by LeRoy Van Dyke and the Auctioneers, with opening act Diane Jordon.

Area farmers, including Gordon Allspach and Paul Watters, have hooked up plows and discs and entered the field with the warm weather that hit Eclipseland this week.

Ken Mehmen and Duane Saul were delegates for Parkersburg FFA at the State FFA Leadership Conference in Des Moines on April 20-22. Also in attendance were Paul Sherman, Rod Mulder and Randy Olson.

Senior members of the National Honor Society in New Hartford are Sherri Cuvelier, Kathy Newgard, Jean Thorne, Jim Anderson, Kris Harper and Delmar Hager.
