Seven girls compete for Miss Parkersburg 2012: Jaclyn Wangler, Tiffany Frey, Nicole Brissette, Ami Carolus, Marisol Seys, Kandice VanDyk and Taryn VanderHolt.

Construction has started on the new storm sewer project in Parkersburg. The 1.3 million dollar project was made possible through a state grant.

Parkersburg Mayor-Pro Tem Leon Thorne signed a “Poppy Day Proclamation” last week while members of the American Legion Auxiliary looked on. The group will be selling through Memorial Day.

Wartburg College student Tyler Winkey is spending four weeks in Nicaragua during the college’s May Term to study civic engagement and leadership. Winkey is the son of Randall and Carol Winkey.

May 22, 2002

Alaina Akkerman of Dike-New Hartford was among the valedictorians honored in KWWL’s Best of Class 2002.

The A-P tennis team qualified for state. Team members: Jay DeVries, Alex Pollock, Kent Klooster, Dusty Hanson, Ryan Ooms and Greg Koenen. A-P defeated Decorah 5-0 for Jon Wiegmann’s 100th career victory as head coach. The Falcons were also conference champions for the third year in a row and seventh out of the last eight years. A-P’s girls also won the tennis conference title.

The Butler County Fair is now listed on the Internet at butlercountyfair.com with all the information on the 2002 Butler County Fair.

Carrie Manifold, Neal Petersen, Caleb Aswegen, Craig Junker, John Hubbard and Tyler Winkey were all selected to participate in the Five Seasons Middle School Honor Band Festival at JFK High School in Cedar Rapids.

May 20, 1992

Travis Schipper (singles) and Darian DeVries/Justin Stockdale (doubles) qualified for the state tournament and will represent Aplington at Byrnes Park in Waterloo on May 29 and 30.

Butler County Hall of Fame Inductees include Gertrude (Ruehaak) DeBerg, Amy Laurena Topp, Otmar W. Zack, George Washington Adair, Ollie Janssen, Phyllis Pooley Rottler and Fred A. Rolfs, M.D.

Chad Wilmer of Parkersburg was selected as KWWL’s Best of the Class 1992, in partnership with the University of Iowa, selected as “role models of excellence” for their fellow students.

Juniors elected into Aplington National Honor Society: Peggy Willis, Joel Kalkwarf, Heather Mellema, John Neymeyer, Heather Kramer, Travis Schipper, Kate Huisinga, Darian DeVries, Kodi Dix, Chad Abbas and Heather Southard.

May 19, 1982

At the Parkersburg Hobby Show, Paul Hoogestraat showed off his hobby of taking care of his cat. Parents were invited to view the many assortments of hobbies by the youngsters and other elementary classes also partook in the project.

Mike Paup Senior Interview: Mike says his favorite pastime is “enjoying all the free time I get.” He listens to “Heavy Metal” by Sammy Hagar and watches “Porky’s” during that free time.

Aplington’s Class of 1982 Valedictorian is James Schwarz, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Schwarz. Jim will be attending Wartburg where he plans to major in Medical Technology.

Thirteen of the 14 living class members that graduated from Aplington High School in 1932 enjoyed dinner and a time of reminiscing on Saturday, May 15 at the Shamrock.

May 17, 1972

Ruth and George Anderson have sold their store, Anderson’s True Value, to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Neavins of Denver, Colorado. The new owners will take over on Wednesday, May 24. The Andersons agreed they are “both sad and at the same time glad” as they enter their final week. They ultimately plan to move to Arizona.

Plans are presently in the making for Parkersburg’s first trailer court, “Sunset Village”, to be located on a six-acre site between Wright and Johnson Streets on the northeast side of town, according to Schuck Realty Company.

Soledad Gravito, an exchange student from Colombia, has been living with the Miles Humphrey Jr. family as a guest. She wants to start college next fall to start earning her Masters Degree.

Richard Humphrey and Craig Anderson will represent Parkersburg at Boys State at Camp Dodge near Des Moines this summer.
