Clara & Kathy are the first patrons in the new library in Parkersburg, which had its grand re-opening April 23 after renovations. Julie Petersen is in the process of painting the giant books in the library.

The A-P Falcon ladies were second overall at their home meet. Shelby Sandoval was first in the discus; Katie Thompson first in the 100 hurdles; and the Falcons were first in the 4x100 relay.

Progress continues on New Hartford’s three FEMA lots, including the 4 Season Perennial Garden Lot, which had an arch installed by volunteers Larry Sammons, Paul Fobian, Bill Close and Larry Chapman.

Governor Terry Branstad and Lieutenant Gov. Kim Reynolds held a town meeting last Thursday at the Vets Building in Parkersburg. Also in attendance were Annette Sweeney and Pat Grassley.

May 8, 2002

Sara Stearns, daughter of Dale and Jan Stearns of Parkersburg, set the Wartburg College track team’s school record in the women’s hammer throw with a throw of 44.69 meters.

Mary Simons was recognized for her contributions to Dike-New Hartford track at the Simons Relays on April 29. Simons received a plaque in recognition of her 30 years of involvement with the track in Dike and New Hartford, as a coach’s wife, a mother, and helper in the meet organization.

Greg’s Taxidermy in Aplington received several awards at the 19th Annual Iowa Taxidermy Associations Competition in Des Moines. Greg Cuvelier, owner, entered a mink in the professional life-size mammal division and won the Presidents Award, presented to the individual whose mount the ITA president selects as his favorite piece in the show.

A-P Prom 2002’s pre-prom activities included a performance of Edwin McCain’s “I Could Not Ask For More” by Alex Pollock and Teresa Kolder.

May 6, 1992

Clubwomen from Parkersburg, Aplington and New Hartford gathered at the Victorian House on Tuesday, April 21 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Parkersburg Woman’s Club.

Iowa State Bank presented a $2,000 check to the Aplington Rec Complex for their fund drive for various improvements to the complex, including upgrading mowing equipment, two new tennis courts, and a new aerator for the greens.

Seventy-two students enjoyed carriage rides during Parkersburg After Prom 1992, pulled by Rick Kuiper of Ackley with his brown and white paint carriage horse.

Brian Sammons is a senior at New Hartford. His goals in life are to make money (lots), live on a beach in California, own a Shar-Pei puppy, grow a bonsai tree, and have a family.

May 5, 1982

State Sen. John Jensen, Republican from Plainfield, visited the Parkersburg High School government classes on Monday. He reviewed this year’s legislative action and described his responsibilities as a senator.

The third distribution of surplus commodities was held at the Civic Center on Wednesday: 840 pounds of cheese and 736 pounds of butter were distributed.

Dave Gibbs of New Hartford won three events at the Pirate Relays in Hudson - the 200-meter dash, 100-meter dash and the 400 low hurdles - he set new school records in the 100 and 200-meter events.

Jim Schipper, a native of Kesley, has recently been elected as President of State Bank of Lamoni, Iowa. Schipper is a graduate of Aplington and Iowa State University.

May 3, 1972

Republican State Representative Charles E. Grassley, 38, of New Hartford, announced today that he would seek re-election to the Iowa House of Representatives.

Construction work is underway on the new First Congregational Church of Parkersburg. Workmen are pictured pouring the concrete floor which doubles as the basement ceiling.

New Hartford won the Big Marsh Conference Meet at Dumont on Wednesday, April 26. Larry Hulsing set two individual conference records; with a 23.2 in the 220-yard dash and a 51.9 in the 440-yard dash. John Blum of Parkersburg won the pole vault with a vault of 11 feet, 9 inches.

The Fire N Ice Lounge opens May 9-10 with live music by the Midwest Countrymen and, by popular demand, The Pacemakers.
