Dallas Druvenga

Dallas Ray Druvenga, age 63, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Joseph Carl and Alice Irene (Frericks) Druvenga on June 23, 1957, in Waterloo, Iowa. Dallas was baptized into the Christians faith at the Parkersburg Christian Reformed Church on July 7, 1957. He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1975, where he was active in golf and baseball.
Dallas frequently expressed his love and appreciation for the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church of rural Holland, Iowa, where he was a member. He worshiped regularly, attended Saturday morning Bible Study, enjoyed Christmas caroling and Monday morning breakfast with men from the church.
Dallas was involved in the baking industry, serving as a baker, baker supervisor, and sales/service technician. After employment at various area bakeries, he used his skills as a Bakery Manager at the Sioux City Hy-Vee #2 Bakery. The bakery was consistently one of the most profitable throughout the Hy-Vee chain. His bakery earned the distinction of being named “Bakery of the Month” 24 times during his tenure – 18 times consecutively. He was a hard-worker and a demanding supervisor but was quick to recognize work that was well-done. He understood the importance of family gatherings and gave employees time off during holidays so that they could be with their families.
He then began employment with the Best Brands Company of St. Paul, Minnesota, where he traveled throughout the Midwest and Southeastern United States, selling bakery ingredients, and worked with retail, wholesale, and in-store bakeries. He was promoted within the company to be Assistant Operation Manager for the consolidated firm of Best Brands/Michigan Bakery Supply. His responsibilities included direct selling to major accounts in Michigan, supervising bakery sales personnel and developing the company promotions for the calendar year.
Dallas was a huge sports fan, including the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeye Football, and Iowa Hawkeye Basketball. In recent years, he enjoyed a variety of travel experiences including a trip to Israel and the West Bank with his two brothers and fishing with work colleagues in Canada and Alaska. He discovered Norwegian Cruise Line vacations, and traveled to the Bahamas, the Caribbean, South America and to Mexico. Favorite experiences included sailing through the Panama Canal and spending time in Aruba. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion organization in Parkersburg and assisted with the Sunday brunches and special dinners.
Dallas died Sunday, January 24, 2021, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, of Acute Respiratory Syndrome, which resulted after surgery. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Dallas is survived by two brothers, Rus (Jocelyn) Druvenga of Dike, Iowa and Darrell Druvenga of Parkersburg; one sister, Diane (Ken) Roberts of Parkersburg; one nephew, Travis (Kristi) Druvenga of Dike; three nieces, Kelli (Jason) Druvenga Hisey of Kansas City, Kansas. Lori Schoon Urich of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Tammi (Clayton) Roberts Lichty of Clemmons, North Carolina.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 29, 2021, at Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in rural Holland, with Pastor Rick Vollema officiating. Pianist was Janet Johnson and she accompanied the congregation as they sang “Children Of The Heavenly Father” and “Day By Day”. Dale Akkerman shared memories. Special music, “Me And God” sung by Josh Turner and “How Great Thou Art” sung by Alan Jackson was played. Burial was held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg, with Roger Arends, Kenny Meester, Kevin Meester, Randy Druvenga, Dale Akkerman and Sahn McLean serving as Casketbearers.
