One million Iowans vaccinated for COVID-19
Iowa crossed a milestone last week as the state vaccinated their one millionth resident.
As of Sunday, May 2, 1,097,265 Iowans have completed their vaccine series. This includes 1,006,321 completing their two-dose series and another 90,944 receiving a single dose vaccination.
Hy-Vee Inc. last week announced that all Hy-Vee pharmacy locations will now be offering free walk-in COVID-19 vaccinations. The grocery chain also announced a partnership with the Iowa Cubs to host a series of vaccination clinics for ticket holders at Principal Park through the month of May.
It is hoped that the increase in availability to boost vaccination numbers as demand for the vaccine begins to wane. Little more than half of eligible Iowans have at least begun their vaccination series, a good start but a long way from the minimum necessary for herd immunity.
In total, the state has administered 2,382,361 doses of vaccine since they were made available. This includes 1,058,801 doses of Moderna; 1,232,616 doses of Pfizer; and 90,944 doses of Janssen's Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
As of Sunday, there have been 365,524 individuals positive with COVID-19 in the state, increasing the 363,043 total from the week prior by 2,481, another small reduction in new cases from the previous week.
The state has performed a total of 4,822,823 tests on 1,713,989 individuals since the pandemic began, including 3,114,943 PCR tests and 1,707,880 antigen tests. In the last week, the state has processed 38,487 PCR tests and 34,163 antigen tests.
In the last week, 12% of new cases have been among the elderly (age 80+), 16% among older adults (60-79); 28% among middle aged adults (40-59); 40% among young adults (18-39); and 4% among children.
122,802 Iowans have undergone serology testing for coronavirus antibodies, which would indicated that they have had the virus. Of that number, 23,172, about 19% have tested positive for antibodies.
Of the 991 individuals tested in the last week, 175 of them (18%) have tested positive.
Hospitalizations have remained relatively flat in the last week, with 181 hospitalized as of Sunday, an increase of just two from the week prior. There are currently 45 severe cases requiring an ICU.
Reported deaths dropped following last week's spike, with the state reporting 32 new deaths bringing the total to 5,959.
In total, approximately 3,478 elderly (58.37%); 2,058 older adults (34.54%), 371 middle aged adults (6.23%), 49 young adults (.82%), and at least one child (.05%) have died from the virus since the pandemic began.
The state has also reported nine additional deaths from long term care facilities, bringing the total to 2,321.
Fortunately, the state is reporting that once again no long term care facilities are in a state of outbreak.
