Area towns prep for Christmas events

‘Tis the season for towns in Eclipse-land to celebrate the Christmas season this December, with events planned in Parkersburg and Aplington.

Parkersburg

The annual Downtown in December event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3. 

Kothe Memorial Library will have goodies with Mrs. Clause from 9-10:30 a.m.; later in the day, there will be a Build a Reindeer event at 11 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. at the library with the ability for kids to build their own reindeer stuffed animal to take home. Those wanting to take part in the Build A Reindeer event are required to register ahead of time by calling 319-346-2442 - limited space is available.

In Downtown Parkersburg, several businesses will get in on the fun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. - A-P Tax and Accounting will have Christmas Cookie decorating, Leah’s Gift and Card Shoppe will offer Christmas Centerpiece Making tutorials, and Melt will offer holiday tattoos. A-P’s High School choir will sing Christmas carols at 3:30 p.m. as the opening act for Santa’s arrival at the Santa House located across from Third Street Grill. Santa will be home from 4-5:30 p.m.

At the Parkersburg Civic Center, Green Belt Bank & Trust will hold Christmas Bingo for all ages from 10 a.m. to noon.

Finally, at the Parkersburg Historical Home, tours will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. with free pie and live Christmas music from the A-P choir at 1:30 p.m.

Aplington

Aplington’s Community of Lights event begins back-to-back weeks of holiday-themed events with the Candy Cane Hunt at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3. Registration opens at Aplington City Park at 6 p.m., with the hunt beginning at 6:15 p.m. Santa will swing by at 6:45 p.m. to light the tree and visit with the kids until 8 p.m. – also, cookies and hot chocolate will be available at the Shelter House at the City Park from 6-8 p.m.

The following week, on Saturday, Dec. 10, there will be a live nativity scene at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church from 6-8 p.m., with a hayride shuttle offered to the church picking up visitors at the City Park. There will be Christmas caroling from the A-P choir in the Park beginning at 7 p.m., and once again cookies and hot chocolate will be available at the Shelter House. The following day, Aplington Baptist Church will host its “Welcome Christmas” musical event at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11.

Aplington residents are asked to have their Christmas lights on each Saturday night in December from 6-8 p.m.
