William Stewart Peters, 89

William Stewart Peters, age 89, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of William W. and Lillian (Lindeman) Peters on August 30, 1934, at DeBuhr Sisters Maternity Home in Aplington, Iowa. He graduated from Aplington High School in 1952. After graduation Stewart started farming with his father on the home place north of Aplington. On September 5, 1956, Stewart was inducted into the United States Army. He served overseas in Korea for one year before being honorably discharged on September 4, 1958. After leaving the service, Stewart returned to farming with his father. He and Audrey later purchased the farm. 

On August 2, 1963, Stewart was united in marriage with Audrey Brandhorst at Zion Lutheran Church in Hudson, Iowa. The couple made their home and farmed north of Aplington. Through the years, Stewart raised crops, milked cows for a short time, raised cattle, and feeder pigs. The couple later moved into Aplington, and he worked for Schwartz Funeral Home after retirement. 

Stewart was an active member of the Aplington Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Aplington. He was a trustee and a member of the church choir. He was a member of the Aplington AMVETS and River City and Proud Image barber shop choruses. 

In his spare time, he enjoyed wood working, collecting construction vehicle collectibles, reading the newspaper, and staying up to date with current events. Later in life he enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s school and sporting activities. Stewart was known for his meticulous care of  his vehicles, farming equipment, and record keeping. Most of all he loved the time spent with his family and especially his grandchildren. 

On September 20, 2023, Stewart passed away at  Maple Manor Village in Aplington, of natural causes. He is preceded in death by his wife Audrey (July 1, 2019); parents; sister, Barbara (Tom) White; and brother, Benton (Miriam) Peters.

Stewart is survived by his daughter, Sandy Peters of Wellsburg, IA; son, Chris (Deb) Peters of Andover, MN; and three grandchildren, AnnEllen, Will, and Collyn Hofmeister. 

A Memorial Service for Stewart was held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at Aplington Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Aplington, with Pastor Doug Hull officiating the service.  Leneé Pollock was the organist and she accompanied the congregation as they sang “It Is Well with My Soul”, “Now the Day Is Over” and  “Oh Love That Will Not Let Me Go”.  Special music was provided by Russ Meyer as he sang “Thy Will Be Done” and “No More Night”.  The burial was held at Pleasant View Cemetery in rural Aplington, with military rites conducted by Aplington AMVETS Post #102.

Visitation was held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at Redman Funeral & Cremation Services – Aplington Chapel.  Memorials may be directed to the family.  Online condolences may be left at www.redmanfuneral.com
